The life-changing magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo

This is book 1 of 3 by a leader in home organization and decluttering, Marie Kondo. And, so far, my absolute favorite. Marie’s simplistic method is inspiring. I love how she ironically takes your logical brain out of the decluttering process and allows you to rely on your emotions. Maybe one of the only leading professionals out there that do that.

This book is available from Amazon on Audible and Kindle but I recommend the hard cover. There are so many nuggets to highlight!

The Clutter Connection by Cassandra Aarssen

This book is available from Amazon on Audible and Kindle but I recommend the actual book. There are so many nuggets to highlight!

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

The first of 3 books by Marie Kondo, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is one of the best books on decluttering. This introduction to the KonMari Method will change everything you’ve thought when organizing your home. Truly life changing! But first we need to clarify what Marie means by “tidying”.

Tidying

Before reading this book on decluttering, I would’ve described tidying as cleaning up, or putting away things where they belong. If you “google” tidying, the first thing that pops up is the definition from Oxford Languages, “bring order to (something); arrange neatly.” Now that makes sense!

The next link that appears as you scroll down is the definition from Cambridge Dictionary, “to make a place or a collection of things tidy”.

The third link that comes up on google is www.konmari.com/about-the-konmari-method/ The description reads “The KonMari Method is a simple but effective tidying method, ensuring you will never again relapse to clutter.” I personally love the word tidying vs decluttering. Tidying not only allows for you to get rid of extra items but also accounts for arranging the items you keep. It’s declutter and organize in one word.

What is the KonMari Method?

The KonMari Method is a process of creating order for the things in your life. This book on decluttering walks you through her philosophy and how she came to developing this method. There are a few main takeaways I’d like to highlight.

1 – Organize by category…not by room, Most would think, “I’d like to get my kitchen in order”. with the KonMari Method you will get your kitchen in order but you need

2 – Rely on your heart…not logic, Wait! What? Believe it or not, Marie’s philosophy insists you select the items you keep solely on how the item makes you feel. She uses the word “joy”. Only keep items that “spark joy” when you pick them up. And, as you decide to dispose of an item, thank it for its service. Even if its only purpose was to tell you that you don’t need it.

3 – Store items vertically…don’t pile In our culture we hang clothes and put them in dressers. Learn how to better utilize your storage spaces and Marie’s ideas on how not piling your items will lighten your life.

Summary on Tidying

There are so many things to like about the KonMari Method. I feel a strong connection to her philosophies on organizing. It makes so much sense to only hold onto items that bring you joy and are currently serving you. She also speaks my language when she talks about organization tools. She states in this book, “you don’t need commercial storage containers. The world is full of handy storage items. You don’t need anything special or fancy.” It shouldn’t cost you to keep your home in order. But beyond that, I love when we can repurpose containers rather than throw them out.

Find so many more nuggets and details in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo when you read it. She goes into detail on the process of her method and why it works. This book is available from Amazon on Audible and Kindle but I recommend the hard cover. So far, this is my absolute favorite book on organizing!
